Begum Hazrat Mahal Biography

Begum Hazrat Mahal, also known as Begum of Awadh was one of the earliest female rebels and freedom fighters from India. She was the first (junior) wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah who rebelled unsuccessfully against the British East India Company during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She died in an asylum in Nepal in 1859. She showed the characters of a good leader and had graceful nature and physical charm, also known by the title - 'Lakshmi Bai' of Oudh. East India company demolished temples and mosques to make way for roads, which she became angry most.

She was born in Faizabad as Muhammadi Khanum. She was a courtesan by profession, who was sold by her parents. She was bought by Royal agents, promoted as Pari and later became a Begam of a royal concubine of the King of Oudh. She was bestowed the title 'Hazrat Mahal' after the birth of their son, Birjis Qadra. The British annexed Oudh in 1856 and Wajid Ali Shah was exiled to Kolkata. Thus the kingdom was left without any ruler. Though she was divorced from Nawab, she took charge over the kingdom of Oudh.

She succeeded in seizing Lucknow from the British with the help of revolutionary leaders. She got the support of Raja Jailal Singh and his group. She crowned her son as royal heir of Awadh. But British re-captured Lucknow and she was forced to retreat. Also very soon Birjis Qadra was forced to abandon this role. She had to retreat to Nepal and stayed at an asylum. She died there in 1879 and was buried there.
