Beena Paul Biography

Beena Paul, also spelled Bina Paul is a veteran film editor associated with Malayalam movies. She is the wife of acclaimed film editor and winner of four national awards, Venu. Hence she is also known as Beena Paul Venugopal. She has held several positions including the artistic director of International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) and the deputy director of Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.

 

Beena too is an extremely talented film editor who won two National Film Awards and three Kerala State Film Awards. She won National award for the first time for Shobana starrer English film - Mitr, My Friend in 2002; the movie which gave second best actress award for Shobana. Beena won it for the second and final time the following year in non-feature film category for her work in Unni. She won Kerala State Film Awards three times for the movies - Daya (1998), Sayahnam (2000) and Bioscope (2008).

 

She was born to a Malayali father and a Kannadiga mother in Delhi, where she was brought up. After graduating from the University of Delhi in 1979, she pursued a diploma in film editing from the Film and Television Institute of India in 1983. Paul got a break as an editor with G. Aravindan's documentary film -The Seer Who Walks Alone (1985). She continued doing a few more documentaries and got her first break through films in 1986. She edited John Abraham's acclaimed film project - Amma Ariyan and there was no turning back after that.

 

She went on to edit some of the classic and hit films of Malayalam cinema. Padippura (1989), Janmadinam (1997), Agnisakshi (1999), Daya (1998), Sayahnam (2000) and Bioscope (2008) are among her noted works in Malayalam, apart from Revathy’s English directorial venture, Mitr, My Friend, which won her the maiden National award. She married cinematographer Venu in 1983. She worked aside her husband for his directorial ventures - Daya (1998), Munnariyippu (2014) and Carbon (2018).
