Bedabrata Pain Biography

Bedabrata Pain is an Indian scientist turned filmmaker. He is the filmmaker of two National award winning movies. His first introduction to movies world was as an executive film producer through 2005 movie, Ammu which was premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival in 2005. The movie also earned National award for best film in English. In 2012 Pain turned a film director and screenwriter with the highly appreciated Bollywood film, Chittagong. The movie earned him 60th National Film Award for the Best Debut Film of a Director. He wrote the book titled Behind the events in Kashmir. He is married to famous scriptwriter and director Shonali Bose with whom he has been associated for several movies.

Pain was born and brought up in Bengal. His parents originally belong to East Bengal who later moved to Bengal in the independent India. Pain’s education was completed in Kolkata. He completed Electronics & Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in the year 1986. With the help of an Ivy League scholarship, he later studied at Columbia University, New York. He completed M.S and PhD in Applied physics in 1992. He met his future wife Shonali Bose while doing his studies at Columbia University. They got married and settled in Los Angeles. The couple had two sons of whom, they lost one child in an accident.

Pain has a working experience of 15 years as senior research scientist at NASA before he quit his professional career in 2008. He owns 87 invention patents to his credit. He made his Bollywood debut as executive producer of Amu in 2005. The movie marked the debut of his wife Shonali Bose as a screenwriter and director. In 2012 he forayed to direction with Chittagong, which was highly praised by critics and won several awards as well. His wife assisted him in its script writer and the movie starred Manoj Bajpai and Vega Tamotia in lead roles. Pain is also a trained painter from his childhood days, and has sung one of the songs for his debut flick. He is also associated with theater.
