Batukeshwar Dutt Biography

Batukeshwar Dutt was a revolutionary and freedom fighter from Bengal. An unsung hero, his struggles were not well recognized. On 8 April 1929, he was one among the group of revolutionaries headed by Bhagat Singh who exploded bombs at Central Legislative Assembly in New Delhi. This historic moment later inspired many youngsters to follow the revolutionary path to achieve freedom. He was one among those who got arrested and imprisoned. He was given life sentence after the trial. He was also associated with Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. Once released after 12 years he participated in Quit India Movement and got arrested again. His last days were spent in extreme poverty and died of tuberculosis in 1965. Batukeshwar Dutta outlived all his comrades of the revolutionary movement.

Shortly called B. K. Dutt, he was born in Kanpur on 18 November 1910. He was born in Oari village of Burdwan district. Dutt also lived in Khanda and Mausu villages of Burdwan district in West Bengal during his younger days. He met Bhagat Singh in Kanpur in 1924 and later remained a close relative of Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh. He was also associated with Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, where he learnt how to make bomb. When revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh gave threat to British power British implement Defence of India Act 1915 which gave more power to police force. As a result Indian political prisoners were highly tortured by police.

As a protest when Bhagat Singh and revolutionaries decided to explode bombs at Central Legislative Assembly in New Delhi, he too joined the group. He got arrested and was given life sentence. He was deported to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He contracted tuberculosis after his release. Despite his bad health he was actively involved with Quit India Movement, and was jailed for four years. He married Anjali, a few months after Indian independence. Independent India forgot this brave hero who fought against poverty and tuberculosis for a long period till 1965. He always chose to remain away from limelight. In the Bollywood film - The Legend of Bhagat Singh, his role was played by Bengali actor Bhaswar Chatterjee, who marked his acting debut with this role.
