Bashir Badr Biography

Bashir Badr is a legendary Urdu poet from India. He writes ghazals with Love and Philosophy as the main themes. For his contributions towards the field of literature, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 1999. He is also a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi award. He also received the Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu for his poetry collection "Aas" the same year. Noted Bollywood lyricist Nusrat Badr, best known for the works of Devdas and Deewangee is his son. Bashir Badr is currently suffering from dementia and age related diseases, and he has completely forgotten his old Mushaira years.

 

His birth name is Syed Muhammad Bashir. He was born in Faisabad, UP on 15 February 1935. He studied at Aligarh Muslim University. He is married to Rahat Badr and the couple has three children including the noted lyricist Nusrat Badr. He lived most of his time at Aligarh university area where he studied as a student (completed B.A. M.A. and PhD) and later taught as well. He also lived in Meerut for a while, followed by Delhi and permanently relocated to Bhopal. While at Meerut, he served as the head of the department of Meerut College, Meerut for 17 yrs. He is prolific in Persian, Hindi and English languages.

 

As a writer, he mostly wrote Urdu ghazals. He published seven collections of Ghazals: ‘Ikai’, ‘Image’, ‘Aamad’, ‘Aahat’, ‘Kulliyate Bashir Badr’ etc. He wrote 2 books of literary criticism - ‘Azadi Ke Bad Urdu Ghazals Ka Tanqidi Mutala’ and ‘Biswin Sadi Mein Ghazal’ and also published a collection of Urdu Ghazals in the Devanagari script, titled ‘Ujale Apni Yadon ke’. He has also worked as a chairman of the Urdu Academy. Some of his poems have been included in the academic syllabus of AMU. He is living a life of solitude in Bhopal these days and suffering from dementia, where his memory is slowly fading.
