Barun Chanda Biography

Barun Chanda is a Bengali film actor received critical acclaim for Satyajit Ray's 1972 Bengali film Seemabaddha. He played the protagonist, Shyamal who is fascinated with the modern industrialized culture. It was the second film in the city triology and Sharmila Tagore played the main lead. She played his sister-in-law’s role in this movie. He also appeared in director Rituparno Ghosh's debut film Hirer Angti. He was recently seen in Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera where he played Sonakshi Sinha's landlord father, Soumitra Roychowdhury from Bengal. He played good-natured father in this movie who loves his daughter Paakhi dearly and even trusts Varun blindly, the character played by Ranveer Singh. Tolly Lights, Antaheen and Laptop are his other noted roles. Apart from an actor he is known as a writer and an advertising professional. As a writer, the Bengali thriller Coke is his most popular work.

He started his career as an actor and writer in the early 1970’s. Apart from the thriller Coke, Shaaper Jhaapi and Kidnap are his other two published works. Actually Coke was written in the 1970’s and he misplaced the handwritten copy in a cupboard. He found it most recently only, did a few alterations and got it published. He added a few more characters and narratives also. Bengali film Seemabaddha released in 1971 still remains his most memorable film, in which he played the main lead.

Now he appears in movies in supporting roles. Elar Char Adhyay, Hirer Angti, Anuranan, Kalo Chhetah, Tolly Lights, Cholo Let’s go, Flop-E, Laptop, Antaheen, Hemlock Society, Mishawr Rawhoshyo, Aborto and Sector V are his other Bengali movies. Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Woh was his first Bollywood movie. But the movie got shelved. Vikramaditya's mother Deepa Motwane knows Barun earlier and he got the role of Lootera through Deepa. Vikramaditya was in search of a perfect Bengali who could bring realistic effect onscreen.
