Bapulal Nayak Biography

Bapulal Nayak was one of the prominent figures of Gujarati theatre during the early glorious era in the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was a stage actor, director and manager of the early Gujarati theatre. Became an integral part of Mumbai Gujarati Natak Mandali at a younger age, he rose to fame with the popular play Sundari, where he played male lead. The female part was played by the male artist, Jaishankar Bhojak, who was quite popular for his ‘female’ roles then. The immense success of this play later formed a series of plays with the same lead, appearing as a romantic pair on stage. He had a long-lasting career of 5 decades in Gujarati theater, yet faced setbacks towards the later years of his life following the advent of cinema.

Bapulal Nayak was born on 25 March 1879 in Gerita, Mehsana, Baroda State in British India. Narayan was his birthname. Bhabhaldas Khemchand Nayak and Narbhibe were his parents. He was born into a family which practised farming and Bhavai (folk theatre) as tradition. He got his primary education from a school belonging to his native village. Though he belonged to a family with folk tradition, he later chose drama as his career.

He started his stage career with Dayashankar Visanji's Mumbai Gujarati Natak Mandali. He earned a monthly salary of three rupees. Harishchandra (1890) was his first play, where he played the role of Indra’s son. Rajbeej (1891) was his second play. He played the titular role in Mularaj Solanki (1895), which earned him recognition, and since then he played lead hero roles in a series of stage plays. His chemistry with Jaishankar Bhojak remained amazing on stage.
