Balwant Moreshwar Purandare Biography

Balwant Moreshwar Purandare is a well-known theatre personality and artist from Pune. He is also a historian, writer and fictional novelist. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian art and culture, government of India honoured him with Padma Vibhushan in 2019. He was awarded the Kalidas Samman by the Madhya Pradesh government for the year 2007-08, for his contributions towards the field of drama.

 

His wife, Nirmala Purandare is a social activist who runs Vanasthali organisation in Pune, and she works are concentrated on the uplift of rural women and child development. Jaanata Raja based on the life of Shivaji Maharaj is one of his major plays, which has been already staged over 864 times in 16 Indian districts since 1985.

 

Balwant Moreshwar Purandare hails from Pune, Maharashtra. He was born on 29 July 1922. He started writing at a young age, when he wrote stories related to the period of Shivaji's reign. Those works were compiled and published as a book titled, "Thingya". Raja Shiva-Chatrapati, Kesari and Jaanata Raja are some of the books related to this subject.

 

Jaanata Raja is a play on Shivaji Maharaj first staged in 1985, and remained immensely popular over the years. It was staged in several parts of different Indian states. This Marathi play was also translated into Hindi, for the purpose of staging it before Hindi audience. This drama is performed by over 200 artists and a few animals, and generally performed during Diwali season.

 

Though he is best known for his works about Shivaji and Marathas, he has also faced criticism. A few activists accused him of sullying the reputation of the great warrior through his writings. But it’s also an ultimate truth – Balwant played a magnificent role in popularizing the stories of Shivaji in Indian household.
