Balmukund Dave Biography

Balmukund Dave was a famous writer belonging to Gujarati language. He was a poet and journalist who lived during the period, 7 March 1916—28 February 1993. He was a recipient of the prestigious Kumar Chandrak award for the year 1948. Dhruvakhyan was his first poetry based on Dhruva, followed by Parikrama (1955), Sone Champo (1959), Allal Dallak (1965) and Zarmariya (1973). His poetry belonged to the genres of folk music as well as devotional. He was also an eminent journalist during his period. He died on 28 February 1993.

 

Balmukund Dave was a Gujarati writer who was born on 7 March 1916 in British India. Mustupura is his native village, and the place now belongs to Vadodara district of Gujarat. His early education was done at Mustupura-Kukarwada Gujarati Government School. Later he pursued his studies from Sayaji High School in Vadodara, where he continued his intermediate studies. After completion, he moved to Ahmedabad in 1938 in search of a job. He worked at literal organization, Sastu Sahitya Karyalaya for a brief period, and after that began his glorious era in the field of journalism. Dave is regarded as one of the foremost journalists of the country soon after Indian independence.

 

His career in journalism began with Navjivan, where he served as a journalist and editor in charge. He spent more than three decades in the field of journalism, and served as the editor of Lokjivan at the time of his retirement. He authored many poetry collections, which include poems for children as well. He was a close friend of Venibhai Purohit, a Gujarati poet, lyricist, short story writer and journalist.
