Balinder Johal Biography

Balinder Johal is an award winning film, stage and television actress, born and raised in India, but later settled in Canada. She is best known for her roles in the films of Deepa Mehta, where she has been almost a permanent fixture, portraying supporting roles. Heaven on Earth and Beeba Boys are her most memorable films in association with Deepa Mehta, which earned her accolades and numerous nominations. Here and Now and My Granny the Goldfish are her most popular stage plays. She has also done guest roles and minor roles in TV shows.

Balinder Johal is originally from Punjab, where she was raised too. She completed her education in India, before moving to Canada to pursue her Master’s degree. She is fluent in four languages - English, Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu. She has used these languages skillfully and effectively in Hollywood and Canadian movies, TV shows and dramas. Her Chaachiji episodes on community related issues, is the best instance. The show was immensely popular, and earned her quick recognition as well. She has also performed in many English and Punjabi plays, staged in US and Canada.

Apart from her role as an actress, she has also done Voiceovers, Narrations and Storytelling. She also worked as a Cultural Consultant, a Dialect Coach and a Translator of dialogue from English toIndian languages for movies and TV shows. She was nominated at Leo Awards 2009 in best supporting actress category for the role she played in Deepa Mehta’s Heaven on Earth. She also received Canadian Screen Award nomination as Best Supporting Actress at Canadian Screen Awards 2016 for the role she played in the movie, Beeba Boys.
