Bajrang Punia Biography

Bajrang Punia is a freestyle wrestler and sportsman from Jhajjar, Haryana. He is one of the top most players of present day generation. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian sports, government of India announced Padma Shri on the occasion of 2019 Republic Day celebrations. In 2018 Asian Games, he won the Men's freestyle 65 kg /Gold medal defeating Japanese Wrestler Takatani Daichi 11-8. In 2018 Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast, Australia, he won the gold medal in the men's freestyle 65 kg category defeating Kane Charig of Wales by Technical Superiority. He won a gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship held at Delhi in 2017.

 

In 2014 Asian Games, he lost in the finals to Masoud Esmaeilpoorjouybari of Iran in Men's freestyle 61 kg category to get a silver. In 2014 Commonwealth Games too, he won a silver. He claimed a bronze at 2013 World Wrestling Championships and also 2013 Asian Wrestling Championships. He has registered some of his major achievements in 2017 and 2018. In 2014 Asian Wrestling Championships, he got a silver while he couldn’t get any in 2015 World Wrestling Championships. He plays for Pro Wrestling League and is a member of JSW owned Bangalore franchise.

 

Bajrang Punia was born on 26 February 1994 in Khudan village of Jhajjar district, Haryana. He began wrestling at the age of seven. He was supported by his father since young. To get better training, the family shifted to Sonepat in 2015. He attended a regional centre of Sports Authority of India. Currently, he works in Indian Railways as Travelling Ticket Examiner. He has been coached by Emzarios Bentinidis, a male freestyle wrestler from Georgia.
