Babu Gulabrai Biography

Babu Gulabrai was a noted writer of modern Hindi literature, who lived during the period, 17 January 1888 – 13 April 1963 in Uttar Pradesh. He authored a history of Hindi literature, Hindi ka subodh itihaas. He is also remembered for developing his own unique style of self-satire, well depicted in Meri Asafaltaein and Thalua Club, his biography works. He also started a literary magazine called Sahitya Sandesh. He used Sanskritized version of Hindi for his literary works, and authored satire, philosophy and literary essay works. Worked as a teacher for many years, some schools of Bareilly have been named after him, and government of India issued a 5 Rs stamp in 2002 to commemorate his contributions towards Hindi literature.

 

Babu Gulabrai was born on 17 January 1888 in Etawah, North-Western Provinces, British India. His father, Babu Bhawani Prasad was a munsarif in the judicial court. His mother’s name was Gomati Devi and he had two siblings. He was married to Bhagwati Devi, and the couple had 8 children. He spent his early life at Mainpuri. Gulabrai completed his MA in Philosophy and also his LLB at Agra University. He worked as private secretary to Maharaja of Chhatarpur, and also as his prime minister and chief justice. By that time he had already started writing. His early works were written in English, mostly philosophical essays, and then he switched to Hindi.

 

He wanted to promote Hindi as national language. For the same reason, thereafter for the entire life he wrote only in Hindi. Following the death of Maharaja, he returned to Agra and resumed writing. He also taught at St Johns College, Agra earning fame as a great teacher. His early works were published in 1913, and he was quite active in the 1940s and 1950s, when he was fully engaged in writing. Shanti Dharma and Maitri Dharma are his early published books.
