B. V. Doshi Biography

B. V. Doshi is a famous Indian architect from Pune, who has given some outstanding contributions in the field of Indian architecture and IIM Bangalore. An academician and institution builder, he is a recipient of many awards. Considered an important figure of South Asian architecture, he has been honoured with France's highest honour for arts the 'Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters' in the year 2011. He has also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Indian government honoured him with Padma Shri for his overall contributions to Indian art. Most recently he was seen in a cameo appearance in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film – O K Kanmani.

 

His full name is Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi. He was born in Pune in 1927. This architect is known for challenging himself by experimenting with design and his works are spread not only in India, but across the world. Spent more than 6 decades in the field of architecture, he is still active in his work at the age of 88. Houses, city planning, public areas or institutions, this artist has his own signature. Some of his early memories in architect include his grandparents’ house in Ravivar Peth in Pune, a wooden building with balconies, tile roofs and kilns outside. These memories have made impact on his work later.

 

During the early 1950s he worked in Le Corbusier in Paris, before he returned to Ahmedabad in 1954. Very soon he established his studio - Vastu-Shilpa. He closely worked with architects - Louis Kahn and Anant Raje. Gained international fame as an architect, he also gave lectures in different educational institutions across the world including US and is known as an academician.
