B. Unnikrishnan Biography

B. Unnikrishnan is a film director and screenwriter of Malayalam, who directed two big hits with Mohanlal – Madambi (2007) and Grandmaster (2012). Mr. Fraud (2014) was his latest release with Mohanlal in the lead role. The movie faced huge competition from ‘How Old are You?’ the same week in May 2014, which marked the comeback of legendary Malayalam actress – Manju Warrior. The movie was panned by critics and was a box office failure too. The movie came to limelight and received enough publicity before its release, when Film Exhibitors Federation imposed a ban on the film in protest against B. Unnikrishnan's alleged instructions to FEFKA and AMMA, Malayalam film organizations. His movies are known for high packed action scenes and heavy dialogues, and giving star image for megastars onscreen.

 

He was born in Pathanamthitta in 1970. A brilliant student in academics, Unnikrishnan took M.Phil from M G University in 1991 with first rank. During this time he started his literal career as well and he wrote on subjects - literature, politics and culture. He also edited books for DC Books, the publication house. He started his career as a screenwriter in 2000 with the movie – Jalamarmaram, which earned state award for best screenplay the same year. Later he wrote screenplays for Suresh Gopi starrer - Cover Story and The Tiger, and Biju Menon starrer Sivam.

 

He made his directorial debut through Smart City in 2006, which starred Suresh Gopi in lead role. This director is known for making thrillers onscreen and Madampi, The thriller, Pramani, I Love Me, Mr. Fraud and Grandmaster are the best instances. 2012 release - I Love Me was a disaster at box office, though it starred Asif Ali, Unni Mukundan, Isha Talwar and Anoop Menon in pivot roles.
