B. Narsing Rao Biography

B. Narsing Rao is a critically acclaimed Telugu film director who has been associated with Parallel cinema. Apart from several international awards he has also won 4 National awards including 3 regional language best film awards and one National Film Award for Best Anthropological/Ethnographic Film. He has won 7 international awards and has also served as a jury of several film festivals. Daasi and Matti Manushulu are his noted works. Daasi won Diploma of Merit award at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1989 and Matti Manushulu won the same award for the year 1991. He received Media Wave Award at the Hungary International festival of visual arts for - Maa Ooru.

 

He was born in 1946. Rao had his schooling at Alwal, a suburb of the twin cities. After studying at Fine Arts college, he took painting as his subject. Very soon he got associated with theatre work and did works including painting, music, photography and literature. Later he got fully asoscaited with theatre works and his works include street plays as well. As a writer, his works deeply reflect his interest on culture and folk forms and he published four volumes of poetry, articles on theatre and cinema and short stories.

 

He entered into film world in the year 1979 with the movie, Maa bhoomi where he worked as co-scriptwriter and co-producer. He received National award for the first time in the year 1983 with the movie, Rangula Kala. It was followed by National awards in the same category for Daasi and Matti Manushulu. He earned National Film Award for Best Anthropological/Ethnographic Film for the documentary film - Maa Ooru. He was the director, producer, music composer and screenwriter of Maa Bhoomi, which earned him Best feature film award at Nandi awards as well as Filmfare.
