B. M. Shah Biography 
B. M. Shah was a theatre personality from Nainital, Uttarakhand. He was a playwright and play director. He played a magnificent role in reviving theatre in Uttarakhand in the post-independent era. He received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1979. He also acted in two Hindi films, Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin (1987 and Dil Se (1998). He also appeared in a documentary film, The Post Master. He served as the Director of Bhartendu Natya Academy. 'B. M. Shah Award' was constituted by Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi, after his death in 1999.
His full name is Brij Mohan Shah. He was born in Nainital in 1933. He completed his Master’s degree before doing his theatre course. He studied from National School of Drama in the early 1960s, and got opportunity to train under Ebrahim Alkazi. He specialized in production, and completed the diploma course in 1962. He later joined NSD as a teacher and served as its director during 1982-1984. He was an Executive Member of the National School of Drama. He has directed and scripted many plays for Bhartendu Natya Academy and Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts. He also contributed regularly to leading Hindi journals and magazines and has translated several popular Western plays into Hindi.
He served as Sanskrit teacher at St. Columba's School, Delhi for several years. He also served as the Director of Bhartendu Natya Academy. Some of his famous plays include - Tughlaq, Ghasiram Kotwal, Hayavadana, Do Kishitiyon Ke Sawar etc. As a playwright, his satirical play, 'Trishanku' staged in 1967 was well received. The play won the Best Production Competition held in Delhi in 1969. He also won the Best Director and Actor Award in Bhopal (1970) and the Best Director of the year Award by the Punjabi Kala Sangam (1978). He has produced more than 60 plays, and has directed a few plays for Doordarshan.
