B. D. Mishra Biography

B. D. Mishra is a former Brigadier of the Indian Army, who currently serves as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh since 3 October 2017. He has preceded    Padmanabha Acharya for this post. He began his career with an Indian army as a permanent regular infantry officer, on 17 December 1961, and retired from the Indian Army on 31 July 1995 as Brigadier, after serving the country for more than three decades. He also served as the Commander of NSG (Black Cat Commandos) Counter Hijack Task Force, which successfully executed the rescue operation at Raja Sansi Airfield, Amritsar, on 24 April 1993 saving all 124 travellers and crew members.

 

Brigadier Mishra was born on July 20, 1939 at Village Kathauta, Gopiganj, in the district of Sant Ravidas Nagar (Bhadohi), Uttar Pradesh. Pt. Jagannath Mishra and Dhirajee Devi are his parents. He completed his schooling and intermediate from Maharaja Vibhuti Narayan Government Intermediate College, Gyanpur and BA from Kashi Naresh Government Degree College, Gyanpur. He was commissioned in Infantry, the Madras Regiment, on December 17, 1961. He had an extended service of two years, granted to him for his meritorious operational service and finally retired from military service in 1995.

 

Mishra owns the distinction to serve his mother country for all the three major wars forced on India - in 1962 Sino-Indian War, 1965 Indo-Pak War, and 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. He operated in insurgency area from 1963 to 1964. He commanded an Infantry Battalion on Line of Actual Control in Poonch Sector from 1979-81. He led a surgical strike on an Indian Airlines hijacked aircraft at Raja Sansi Airfield, Amritsar in 1993, saving 124 passengers and crew members. It’s one of the major achievements of his service.
