B. C. Gowrishankar Biography

B. C. Gowrishankar was an accomplished cinematographer of Kannada film industry. He bagged Karnataka state award for best cinematographer 6 times during his life time. He was an occasional script writer and film director as well. His daughter Rakshita has been a popular heroine in the early 2000s. Noted Film director Prem is his son-in-law. Known for his unorthodox style as a cinematographer, he worked with film directors belonging to both genres of film making – art and commercial.he received state award for best cinematographer for the movies - Spandana (1978), Arivu (1979), Minchina Ota (1980), Dhruva Thare (1985), Mysore Mallige (1992) and Om (1995). Mysore Mallige was widely appreciated by critics and audience upon release and earned numerous awards in different categories as well.

 

He was born in Bangalore, Karnataka in the year 1950. B. Channabasappa and Shashimukhi were his parents. Gowrishankar earned a diploma in cinematography from Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic. Then he started his professional career in Kanteerava Studios, Bangalore where he worked for a while. Later he entered film industry in the mid-1970s. Pattabhirama Reddy’s Shringaramasa was his first experience as a cameraman. Through 1977 movie Anuroopa he turned an independent cinematographer. The following year he earned his first state award through the movie Spandana. It was followed by Ariva, which earned him critics’ appreciation. Since then he made a niche of his own in Kannada film industry.

 

This cinematographer is known for capturing certain memorable shots on silver screen. For the picturisation of a single song, "Mani Mani Manigondu Daara" of the movie Janumada Jodi, he took 9 days so that he could shoot sunset in backdrop with full perfectness. He wrote and directed the movies - Elu Suttina Kote and Aata Bombata. He had worked for more than 90 films and passed away at a comparatively young age of 50. Apoorva Sahodarargal and Michael Madan Kamarajan (both Kamal Hassan starrers) are his Tamil works. Phool is his Hindi movie, which starred Madhuri Dixit and Kumar Gaurav.
