Avvai Natarajan Biography

Avvai Natarajan is an Indian scholar and educationalist from Tamil Nadu. He earlier served as the Vice-Chancellor of Thanjavur Tamil University before his retirement. For his priceless contributions towards the field of education, Indian government honoured him with Padma Shri in 2011. He also served as the secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Department of Tamil Language Development and Culture. He is a member of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, aimed to promote and propagate classical Tamil language and culture.

 

Avvai Natarajan was born in the year 1936. He started his career as a professor, but gained prominence as an ambassador of the Tamil language. Tamil Nadu Government appointed him the Director of Translations in 1975. While serving as the Secretary of the Department of Tamil Language Development and Culture and Literature and Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur, he did a prominent work in the promotion of Tamil language. He also serves as an adviser to Sakthi Group of Companies, and an advisory board member to advisory councils of Sattakadir and the Madras Development Society.

 

He serves as the chairman of selection committee of the Aram Award. A well-known orator, he has been a mentor to popular orator, writer and scholar Sugi Sivam, who is quite popular among Tamilians for his inspirational speeches. Natarajan delivers keynote addresses in many seminars, and is a prominent figure in this world. For his enormous contributions as an educationist and a promoter of classical Tamil language and culture, Government of India honoured him with Padma Shree in the year 2011. Natarajan still works in full swing for the promotion of his mother tongue, Tamil. He holds an MLitt and a doctoral degree (PhD) in Tamil literature.
