Avtar Gill Biography

Avtar Gill is a veteran Bollywood actor who was popular in early 80’s and 90’s and he is still associated with films playing character roles. He portrayed several memorable grey shaded roles onscreen which earned him accolades. Gill has portrayed character roles in more than 100 films and has experimented with every genre of character roles. He also worked in many television serials. He is of Punjabi origin and currently stays in Chembur, Mumbai.

 

He entered the film industry in 1979 and has completed 35 years in Bollywood. Rose to prominence with the early 1990s, some of his unforgettable roles include - Bollywood Dreams (1995), Baadshah (1999), Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee, Baazi (1995), Aashiqui (1990) and Gunaah (1993). 'Shehenshah' (1988), Mohra (1994), Rangeela (1995), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998), 'Agneepath' (1990) and 'Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi' (1991) are other noted works.   

 

Gill was born at Alakh village in Ahmedgarh, Ludhiana. Though a rich city it was known for poor infrastructure and later his family shifted to Mumbai to give better education to the kids. His parents were against his dream to become a film actor. However Gill dreamt to become a villain of big screen. Made his film debut in the early 1980s he rose to prominence by 1990s. Gill has worked with almost all senior artists of the industry including Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, to the latest Khans and Kapoors of the industry.

 

Gill, known to be a bad guy of Bollywood is an accomplished theatre artist too. He has experience of more than 35 years in films and theatre. He believes theatre has a lot of talent but no money, and a lot remains to be done.
