Avinash Kaur Sarin Biography 
Avinash Kaur Sarin is an iconic personality associated with the golden years of Doordarshan, when she remained one of the top news readers. She remained a News Anchor, former Broadcast journalist and documentary director, and one of the most familiar faces among Indian television views in the 1980s and 1990s. Thinking about her association with Doordarshan for nearly three decades or so is nostalgic for many Indians. She is also a member of the official panel of directors and producers at Doordarshan, and has made many documentaries too.
Avinash Kaur Sarin was born into a Sikh family in New Delhi on 21 July 1955. She educated from Miranda House, University of Delhi, where she completed double degrees in Physics and Education. She joined Doordarshan in the year 1979 as a TV anchor of a science show, Vigyan Patrika. By 1980s she went on to become one of the top and celebrated TV anchors of Doordarshan, when this national channel was the only visual source of entertainment and news. She continued with anchoring shows and news in the 1990s as well.
She married businessman Manjit Singh Sarin in New Delhi, and the couple has one son and one daughter. For her news presentations, she used to wear big round shaped bindis which became instant hit among viewers. She was then known for her characteristic large Bindi while her colleague Salma Sultan was known for her trademark roses. It became a style quotient then. Kaur also popularized hand woven and crafted Indian saris. She appeared in Indian saris only for news reading. During the infamous Sikh riots of 1984, when she was absent for one month, Doordarshan received millions of letters including one from President's House enquiring about her well-being. That was her popularity among Indian viewers.
