Auto Shankar Biography

Auto Shankar is the nickname of an Indian serial killer from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was hanged to death on April 27, 1995 in Salem Central Prison. Shankar and his gang were found guilty of six murders, committed over a period of two years in 1988–1989. They were tried for the murders of Lalitha, Sudalai, Sampath, Mohan, Govindaraj and Ravi. His gang included his younger brother also.

 

Shankar’s gang included his younger brother Auto Mohan and their associates were Eldin, Shivaji, Jayavelu, Rajaraman, Ravi, Palani and Paramasivam. In 1988, over a period of six months, nine teenage girls from the Thiruvanmiyur section of Chennai disappeared. At first investigators believed that those poor girls were sold by parents for prostitution, as they were not able to afford the dowry to be given during marriages. But it proved false very soon, because even after repeated questioning the parents denied.

 

Later a schoolgirl named Subalakshmi claimed that an auto rickshaw driver tried to abduct her in front of a wine shop. Detectives worked undercover behind the wine shop. Later it came to know that an auto rickshaw driver named Shankar was behind these incidents. They also came to know that he cremates the dead remains of girls in Bay of Bengal or buried inside residential houses, to destroy proofs. The following morning, the prime suspect was caught by police and the whole world knew him in the name of Auto Shankar.  

 

Shankar confessed that he supplied the teenage victims to politicians who raped and killed them. He also blamed movies for provoking him to commit such crimes. Shankar was sentenced to death along with two of his associates, Eldin and Shivaji, on May 31, 1991. He was hanged to on April 27, 1995 at the age of 41.
