Atul Dodiya Biography

Atul Dodiya is an Indian artist and painter from Ghatkopar, Mumbai. He has conducted many solo exhibitions since late 1980s in many cities across India, US, Singapore etc. He won Raza award in 2008, given by Raza foundation. Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship of Italy and Sotheby's Prize in 1999, Sanskriti Award 1995 and Gold Medal from Government of Maharashtra in 1982 are other major honours received by him. He is based in Mumbai and is one of the iconic contemporary artists from the city.

 

Atul Dodiya was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra in 1959. He graduated from Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai in the early 1980s. His active career in painting began in the early 1980s when he started exhibiting his works and also sold them. He received Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship of Italy in 1991 on which he studied for two years at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Atul has never restricted himself to any particular style of work and constantly explored new methods, new spaces and new discourses. He is well known for his craftsmanship and technique. Dodiya is acknowledged as a leader of the younger generation of artists.

 

Till now he has done around 28 solo exhibitions since 1980s. His globally recognised exhibitions include - mid-career retrospective at Japan Foundation Asia Centre, Tokyo in 2001, Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid in 2002 and at the Contemporary Arts Centre, Cincinnati, US in 2013. In the mid-1990s he created a self-portrait where he’s represented himself as James Bond. In 1999 he conducted an exhibition dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, and it was titled - “An Artist of Non-Violence”. He began using versatile mediums in 2000, when he experimented for the first time with roller shutters.
