Attoor Ravi Varma Biography

Attoor Ravi Varma is one of the pioneers of modern Malayalam literature. In 2001 he received Kendra Sahitya Academy Award for his collection of poems titled - Attoor Ravi Varmayute Kavitakal, and his contributions to modern Malayalam literature. He is a native of Attoor village of Thrissur district and ‘Atoor’ tag got added to his name. Apart from his poetry works he translated several Tamil works to Malayalam. A documentary film was made of his life by Anvar Ravi - Maruvili, which featured many leading Malayalam literals of the present times. Kendra Sahitya academy financially helped in the making of this documentary and was screened at the Mumbai International Film Festival.

Known as a genius of present times, he is also a recipient of several top honours such as Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (Poetry) for Attoor Ravi Varmayute Kavitakal (1996), Aasan Prize (1997), P. Kunhiraman Nair Award for Attoor Ravi Varmayute Kavitakal Bhagam Randu (2005), Ezhuthachan Award (2012), Translation prize by Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kendra Sahitya Academy, Premji Award, E. K. Divakaran Potti Award, Mahakavi Pandalam Kerala Varma Kavitha Award and many more.

He was born and brought up in Attoor village, Thrissur. A major practitioner of modern Malayalam poetry, his college education was completed at University College, Thiruvananthapuram, Malabar Christian College and Kozhikode Samoothiri College. He has also worked as a lecturer. Attur Ravi Varmayude Kavithakal is a compilation of his poetry in two volumes, published during the period - (1957–1994) and (1995-2003). ‘Kavitha’, ‘J. J. Chila Kurippukal’, ‘Oru Pulimarathinte Katha’, ‘Nale Mattoru Nale Mathram’, ‘Randam Yamangalude Katha’, ‘Puthunanooru’, ‘Bhakthikavyam’ and ‘Thazmizh Puthu Kavithakal’ (translation work) etc are his other published works.
