Ashwini Kumar Choubey Biography

Ashwini Kumar Choubey is Bihar’s prominent Brahmin face and a very popular politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party who joined Modi’s cabinet in September 2017 following the reshuffle. Currently Choubey represents Buxar in the Lok Sabha. He has earlier served as a member of the parliamentary committee on estimates, standing committee on energy and consultative committee on health and family welfare. A veteran of state politics, Choubey is a five-term MLA from Bihar. He is credited with overpower the Buxar seat from RJD's grip and thus giving it to BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He took oath as minister of state in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in September, 2017.

Hails from Bhagalpur of Bihar, Ashwini Kumar Choubey was born on 2 January 1953. He started his journey in politics as a student union leader in Patna University. With mid 1970s he became fully active in students’ politics. He served as a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad from 1974 to 1987. Completed his graduation in Zoology from Patna University, Ashwini Kumar Choubey is also known as an agriculturist apart from a social worker.

He actively participated in the JP movement in the 1970s, and was taken into custody during Emergency period. He has been elected to state assembly 5 times and also served as the health minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet in 2012. In June 2013, he was sacked along with 10 other BJP ministers after the JD(U) severed ties with BJP. His toilet campaign slogan - “Ghar ghar mein ho shouchalaya ka nirman, tabhi hoga ladli bitiya ka kanyadaan” is indeed popular. He also helped in constructing 11,000 toilets for Mahadalit families. Choubey has held many key portfolios in the NDA government in Bihar - Urban Development, PHED and Health during 2005-2010 and 2010-2013.
