Ashvin Kumar Biography

Ashvin Kumar is an independent Indian filmmaker who has directed many award winning movies. But his films have faced controversies too, for nudity and provocative content too. He owns a rare distinction of winning a National film award for a movie that received a ban in India. His film, Inshallah Football received National award for Best Film on Social Issues 2012. However the movie couldn’t get a theatric release and was deemed unfit for consumption by Censor board. Kumar won an Oscar nomination for his first short film Little Terrorist. His films such as The Forest and Dazed in Doon are other ones which ran into controversy.

 

Ashvin Kumar was born in 1973 in Kolkata. He is the son of well-known fashion designer, Ritu Kumar. In the film industry he is known as a film director, producer, screen writer and also an editor of films. In 2005 he became the youngest Indian filmmaker to win an Academy award nomination. He won the nomination for the short film Little Terrorist. He is also the first Indian to be nominated at the European Film Academy (for the same movie). Currently he is working on the movie - 'Noor', a story of three generations of women trapped in the conflicts of Kashmir.

 

Ashvin completed his graduation from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi. Later he moved to London and studied media and communication at Goldsmith’s University. He reached India after completing graduation. But lack of good opportunities to make good short films prompted him to move to London. Road to Ladakh (2004) was his first film. Since then he has made many independent films, which have faced controversies and issues with censorship as well. He is best known for his short film Little Terrorist, which was shown at many film festivals and received many awards as well.
