Ashok Malhotra Biography

Ashok Malhotra is a former cricketer who played for Indian team in the 1980s. He played in 7 Tests and 20 ODIs between 1982 and 1986 and was said to be the next Viswanath in Indian Cricket. He scored 226 runs from 7 test matches and 457 runs from 20 ODI. At the peak of his career, he was the highest run scorer in Ranji matches of his time. From 156 first-class matches for Haryana and Bengal, he scored 9,784 runs at an average of 50.95. After retiring from all forms of cricket, he started a cricket academy to train students. His academy Ashok Malhotra Cricket Academy trains more than 300 students. Malhotra briefly coached Team India in the absence of regular coach John Wright in 2003.

He was born on 26 January 1957, in Amritsar, Punjab. He has been a right handed batsman and medium pace bowler for his team. He contributed as a batsman to his teams. When he batted on crease he often reminded spectators of Gundappa Viswanath. In the early 1980s he was a great name of domestic games, and he played for Haryana. His outstanding innings in domestic cricket gave him opportunity to play for Indian team. He made his test debut against England at Chepauk in 1982. Though he has been a team member several times, he got less opportunity to play, as Viswanath and Yashpal Sharma made huge partnerships in those days.

In 1982 he was a team member that toured England and he also made one century against Kent. But he didn’t get more opportunities to play in the series. Throughout his career, he managed to score 2 half centuries only, one in test and one in an ODI. He scored both 50s against West Indies. His ODI career ended with a middling average of 30.46. But he always shined against Sri Lankans. He shares a unique world record aside Glenn Turner. Throughout his international career, he got opportunity to bowl a single over only and it was a maiden over. Thus he retired from international matches with an economy rate of 0! It was an ODI against Sri Lanka in Amritsar.
