Ashish Kumar Biography

Ashish Kumar is an Indian gymnast from Allahabad. He is one of the top gymnastic players the country has ever produced, and most of his achievements are from Commonwealth Games. He won gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games thus becoming the first Indian player to win first-ever medals in gymnastics in a major international event including Commonwealth games. He has also won bronze and silver medals in different gymnastic events at Commonwealth Games for India. For his contributions towards Indian sports, especially gymnastics, government of India honoured him with Arjuna Award in 2011. Ashish also gave single achievement of India in gymnastics at Asiad through a bronze medal in 2010.


Ashish Kumar was born in 1990 in Allahabad, UP. The first international event he participated was 2006 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships staged in Surat, and he won a bronze medal in the tournament as well. It was India's first major international medal in the history of artistic gymnastics. He continued his success streak in the following years as well. He represented India at Asian games held at Qatar in 2006, but finished without any major achievement. However he managed to qualify to the final round.


At the 2010 Commonwealth Games he first won a bronze medal in the floor exercise, followed by a silver medal on vault. He won his first medal at Asiad the same year when he won the bronze medal in the floor exercise. It was also India’s first ever and only medal in gymnastics in Asian games. South Central Asian Gymnastics Championships in Dhaka in 2011 is yet another major tournament of his career, where he won four gold medals in individual events.
