Ashim Ahluwalia Biography

Ashim Ahluwalia is an Indian National award winning film director and screenwriter. His 2014 released movie is Miss Lovely which starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Niharika Singh in lead roles. This movie was earlier premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. He made his directorial debut with documentary film, John & Jane (2005), which was premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and a European premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. It won him National Film Award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director in the year 2005. He belongs to new generation directors of Indian cinema who avoids casting leading stars in his movies. His movies lie somewhat in between documentary and fiction story lines.

 

Ashim was born in Mumbai in 1972. He did schooling from Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai and graduated in film making from Bard College, New york. He began his career in the middle 1990’s, where he experimented with his ideas and worked on documentary and short films. His first short film was ‘The Dust’ (1993). He established his own production company, Future East, in 2005 and preferred to work outside mainstream Indian cinema.

 

Ahluwalia was selected by the San Francisco Film Society as their Artist in Residence for 2013. He received the Charles Flint Kellogg Award in Arts and Letters from Bard College, the same year. In 2013, he was a jury member at Rome Film Festival. Phaidon Press entered his name among the ten best emerging film directors at present. His noted short films are The Dust (1993), A Short Season (1995), Thin Air (1999) and Development Plan (2007). Miss Lovely, his recent release explores the story of porn film industry in Mumbai.
