Asghar Wajahat Biography

Asghar Wajahat is an Indian writer and scholar associated with Hindi literature. He carried the roles of fiction writer, novelist, playwright, and also wrote scripts for TV serials. He is an independent documentary filmmaker best known for 'Saat Aasmaan' and his acclaimed play, 'Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Nai', based on the story of an old Punjabi Hindu woman & partition. As a writer, Asghar has published around 20 books which include five collections of short stories, six collections of plays and street plays, and four novels. Served as the professor of Jamia Millia Islamia, he retired as Head of the Hindi Department.

 

His real name is Syed Asghar Wajahat. He was born on July 5, 1946 in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh. He took his Master’s in Hindi in 1968 and PhD in 1974, both from Aligarh Muslim University. He started his writings in the early 1960s while he was studying in AMU, and later became a reputed writer of Hindi language. He joined Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi in 1971 as a Lecturer of Hindi, and later became a Professor and also the Head of the Department of Hindi in the university.

 

He translated "Harf-e-Aashna" and "Zer-e-Lab", two notable works of Safia Akhtar, wife of Jan Nisar Akhtar. He wrote short stories, plays, novels, travelogues, street plays and also a book on literary criticism. He has also written film scripts and conducted workshops on screen writing. He also wrote television scripts. Many of his works have been translated to other Indian and foreign languages. Lies: Half told – is a collection of his English short stories. He regularly writes for various newspapers and magazines, and also serves as guest editor for different types of Hindi publications.
