Asaf Ali Asghar Fyzee Biography

Asaf Ali Asghar Fyzee was an educator, jurist, author, diplomat, and Islamic scholar who lived in the 20th century. Asaf is widely regarded as one of leading pioneers of modern Ismaili studies. He was also a diplomat who served as India's first ambassador to Egypt from 1949 to 1952. He also served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu and Kashmir between 1957 and 1960. He was an author who wrote many books on Islam, and Outlines of Muhammadan law is his celebrated work. For his contributions towards the field of religion and administration, Government of India honoured him with the third highest civilian honour - Padma Bhushan in 1962.

 

Asaf Ali Asghar Fyzee was born on 10 April 1899 in Matheran, Bombay Presidency. His birthplace now belongs to Maharashtra. His schooling and college studies were done in Mumbai. He completed law studies from Government Law College, Mumbai. To take advanced studies in languages, he moved to Cambridge and learnt Arabic and Persian. By the age of 26, he started practising law at Mumbai. He served as an advocate in the Bombay High Court from 1926 to 1938.

 

For the next 9 years till Indian independence, he served as Principal and Perry Professor of Jurisprudence in Government Law College, Mumbai. In 1949 he had a new career beginning and became the first Indian ambassador to Egypt. Once he returned he was appointed as a member of UPSC in 1952. He later served as the VC of University of Jammu and Kashmir during 1957-1960. He was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society and held the "Commonwealth Fellowship”. His other interests include cricket, and has appeared in a few first class matches.
