Arundhati Devi Biography

Arundhati Devi was a top heroine of Bengali cinema during the early era of 50’s and 60’s. She acted in about 16 films, directed 5 feature films and worked as the scriptwriter and music director of single movie, Chhuti in 1967 also. She is the wife of great Bengali director, Tapan Sinha.

 

Arundhati was born in Barisal, East Bengal as the daughter of Bibhucharan Guha Thakurta. She completed her studies from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. She studied training in dance, theatre and singing from Visvabharati. She married director Prabhat Mukherjee in the year 1955. But they got separated and she married director Tapan Sinha, two years later. Their son Anindya Sinha is a famous scientist. She died in the year 1990.

 

After studies, Arundhati dreamt of becoming a journalist. But she got influenced by her family friend, scriptwriter Binoy Chatterjee and joined New Theatre Studios at Kolkata. Her debut was through seminal film Mahaprasthaner Pathey (1952). Its Hindi remake was Yatrik. The movie in which she portrayed the role of a widow named Rani was a huge hit at box office and it established her as an actress as well. Later she continued delivering hits after hits. By the same time, she was busy with theatre plays as well and she was active during two decades of 1950’s and 1960’s. Indradhanu, Shashi Babur Sansar and Pushpadhanu are regarded as the best performances of Arundhati though the movies were only moderate success at box office.

 

She turned producer for the first time with Bicharak (1959) directed by Prabhat Mukherjee and the movie received Third best film award in National awards category. Bijoy Bose’s Bhagini Nivedita (1962) was another significant role of her acting career. But after that she began to stand behind cameras instead of acting in front of it. She has directed 5 movies in her career – Chhuti, Megh-o-roudra, Padi Pishir Barmi Baksha, Deepar Prem and Gokul.
