Arun Mukherjee Biography

Arun Mukherjee or Arun Mukhopadhyay is a noted Bengali stage actor and film actor. He is also known as a successful playwright also. He is the author of many plays including the classic Marich Sangbad, and this work has been translated to English by Utkal Mohanty. This contemporary work spotlights the contemporary social woes of the oppressed Indian peasantry. Jagannath, Maareech The legend and Ramjatra are other well known playwrights written by Arun Mukherjee. He has also acted in a few Bengali movies. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor in 1979, for his role in the Bengali film Parashuram. This theatre drama was directed by celebrated film maker of Bengali cinema – Mrinal Sen. It received silver prize at 11th Moscow International Film Festival. Arun was paired opposite Sreela Mazumder , a noted artist of Bengali cinema.

Noted films of Arun include – Kanjenjunga, Subbha drishti, A Soft Note on a Sharp Scale, Chhaya Surya, Milan Thithi, Harmonium, Love you I, Abar Aranye, The Man with the Axe, And Quiet Rolls the Dawn, Nimanthran, Swapna Niye, Mohanar Dike, Chaalchitra, Surer Akashe, Sabuj Dwiper Raja, Ekanto Apun, Pathbola, Agaman, Dhusar Godhuli, Kothachilo and Parasuram. Most recently he has appeared in Har Mana Har 2013, released in the year 2013.  He is active in the industry still now till 1960’s.

Arun is a celebrated theatre personality. He dominated the era of 1980’s and his theatre direction made him one of the prominent figures of this decade. Many of his plays have played for more than hundred days in theatre. Mareech Sambad, in particular, could be called a cult hit in the group theatre world of Bengal. He is associated with the theater group Chetana both as actor as well as director. Mareech: The legend was written in the year 1999 and it’s grouped under fiction works.
