Arun Lal Biography

Arun Lal is a former cricketer batsman associated with Indian cricketer team. Though retired from all forms of cricket, he is quite familiar to Indian audience as a commentator of cricket matches for TV in India and abroad. He also writes columns on cricket and cricket analysis for leading dailies. Started his career in Bengal cricket in the year 1981 he was associated with domestic matches as a player till 2001, for two long decades. He was associated with club matches for East Bengal during his last few years. He was instrumental in bringing Bengal its first Ranji Trophy after 51 years in 1989. In the 1980s and early 1990s he played a significant role in making East Zone and Bengal two big forces in the national scenario during this period. He made his international test career debut in 1982.

 

His full name is Jagdishlal Arun Lal. He was born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh in 1955. He studied at Mayo College, Ajmer. After playing domestic cricket he played his first international match for team India in 1982. Since then he was associated in international cricket scene till 1989. He retired from first class matches in 1995. Though his ODI career was not so brilliant, he is known for his achievements in test cricket matches. His test batting average is also only 26.03. He scored 6 50s for India and his highest score is 93. He scored a total of 729 runs in test matches.

 

This right-hand batman made his test debut against Sri Lanka in 1982. He scored 63 runs in his debut test innings which includes a partnership of 156 runs with Sunil Gavaskar. In the next test, which he played against Pakistan, he was an opening batsman against Sunil Gavaskar, and scored his first 50 too. A familiar face to Indian audience as a commentator he was also pictured in the popular song of National integration on Doordarshan - "Mile Sur Mera Tumara" in1988. He has also served as a team coach of the East Zone branch of the National Cricket Academy.
