Arun Gawli Biography

Arun Gawli is a politician from Mumbai who was earlier a gangster and has been convicted for murder and imprisoned for life. He served as MLA in the state assembly elections of 2004. This gangster-turned-politician is the co-founder of Akhil Bharatiya Sena, a regional political party of Maharashtra. His gang was based at Dagdi Chawl in Byculla- Saat Rasta, Mumbai. His wife Asha Gawli is also a politician of his regional party who currently serves as MLA of Maharashtra. Noted politician and MLA - Sachin Ahir is his nephew. Though he has criminal background, most of the cases registered against him lack enough proof and he was finally convicted for murder of Shiv Sena leader Kamalakar Jamsandekar in 2012. He along with 11 others was found guilty for the case.

Gowli was born in Kopargaon, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. He rose to prominence as a gangster in the 1980s and got strong support from Sivsena leader Bal Thackeray, who criticized Mumbai police for taking actions against Hindu gangsters. Gowli used to kidnap people and torture them for money. Though many murders have been claimed against him, none of them could give enough proofs and thus Arun escaped from the eyes of law everytime. Though he was closely associated with Siv Sena, he split with them in the mid-1990s to form his new party - Akhil Bharatiya Sena. He also killed a few men belonging to Siv Sena.

His "native roots" as a local lad helped him to gain attention as a politician and he won state assembly elections in 2004. However his open war with his nephew Sachin Ahir, who joined Congress, led to the fall of both in the next assembly elections. In 2012, he was convicted for murder of Shiv Sena leader Kamalakar Jamsandekar.
