Arpinder Singh Biography

Arpinder Singh is an Indian athlete associated with triple jump event. In 2018 Asian games held at Jakarta, he created history by winning a gold in stunning performance in triple jump event, after a long break of 48 years. India won this gold medal for the last time in 1970 Asian games when Mohinder Singh Gill claimed it with an effort of 16.11m. Arpinder Singh, who is currently 25 years old has won a bronze medal at 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Currently he is supported by Anglian Medal Hunt Company, known for promoting young talents, with aim of Olympics.

 

Arpinder Singh was born on 30 December 1992 in Amritsar, Punjab. He belongs to Harsha Chhina village of Amritsar. Though he had many stunning wins in the past, he has received less support from state government, in terms of financial aid as well as prizes. He was one among the sportsmen who threatened state government to migrate to Haryana and represent this state at National Games in Kerala if they were not honoured with the cash awards for winning medals at the international competitions. Earlier Punjab state government had announced special cash prizes for those who won medals at the Incheon Asian Games and Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

 

Singh has represented India at various competitions since 2010. He won his first international medal at the 2010 Asian Junior Athletics Championships. Asian Championships held at Pune in 2013, Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 and Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games at Ashgabat in 2017 are other major tournaments prior to his appearance in Asian Games in 2018, where he bagged a gold in triple jump category. Arpinder has a personal best of 17.17m.
