Aroon Purie Biography

Aroon Purie is an entrepreneur, journalist and one of the top media personalities of India at present. He is the founder-publisher of India Today and the chief executive of the India Today Group. Currently he serves as the editor-in-chief of ‘India Today’ and Reader's Digest India. He is the managing director of Thomson Press (India) Limited and the chairman and managing director of TV Today. He is the chairman of the Federation of International Periodicals and Publications, only the first Indian to hold this position. He is one among the top 50 most influential people in Broadcast Channels, India. Noted Bollywood actress and TV anchor, Koel Purie is his youngest daughter. Aroon Purie was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2001.

 

He is a qualified Chartered Accountant who studied at Doon School and took degree from London School of Economics in 1965. In 1970 he joined Thomson Press as Production Controller and stood as its guiding power till he handed over the power to his son. Thomson Press is the largest commercial printer in South Asia. His father, Vidya Vilas Purie began the India Today Group in 1975, around the time of Emergency period during the ministry of Indira Gandhi. He launched the fortnightly magazine India Today in 1975. Aroon Purie served as its publisher while his sister Madhu Trehan became its editor.

 

Today, the Living Media group is one of the biggest media conglomerates in the country, with monopoly on various means of media like dailies, magazines, television, internet and radio. This includes 32 magazines, seven radio stations, four TV channels and one daily. The TV Channels include – Aaj Tak and Headlines Today.
