Arko Datta Biography

Arko Datta is an award winning photographer best known for his association with Reuters. He is also an educator. His photographs of the Gujarat riots in 2002 earned him international fame. He is a recipient of the prestigious World Press Photo award in 2004. Datta bagged most of the awards in the Mumbai Press Photo Contest 2004 organised by the Mumbai Press Club in 2004, including the best general news photographer of the year and also the outstanding sports photographer. His pictures were chosen as the best in four different categories — spot news, general news, sports and daily life.

 

Arko Datta was born on 4 February 1969 in Delhi. He started his career with Indian Express in 1991. He later worked as a photojournalist with The Telegraph, AFP and Reuters, covering many international events. His photograph of tsunami victims at Cuddalore in 2004 and the Gujarat riots in 2002 earned him international fame, and many awards and honours. Apart from his career as a photographer, he also teaches photography at Udaan School of photography in Mumbai, a school of photography which he co-founded.

 

His photographs are regularly published in many international publications and dailies such as The New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, International Herald Tribune etc. His pictures have also appeared on the covers of Time magazine, Newsweek, The Economist etc. He is a recipient of Photographer of the year award by Asian Photography magazine twice in 2003 and 2004. He has been recognised as one of world's top 20 photographers by Rotovision in its coffee table book. Many of his works have been featured at coffee table books and exhibitions worldwide.
