Arjun Atwal Biography

Arjun Atwal is an Indian professional golf player from West Bengal. He is the first Indian golfer to become a part of U.S-based PGA Tour, and he emerged as its winner as well, creating a new record. In 2008, he was awarded the Arjuna Award for his contributions and achievements in Indian sports. He has represented India at World Cup 2005, and has been a part of Royal Trophy 2006, EurAsia Cup 2018 and Dynasty Cup representing Asia in 2003, where he was a part of winning team.

 

Arjun Singh Atwal was born on 20 March 1973 in Asansol, West Bengal. He belongs to a Sikh family. His father Harminder Singh Atwal is a well-known industrialist. Arjun started playing golf at the age of 14. He played and practised at Royal Calcutta Golf Club and Tollygunge Club in his teens. He completed his schooling from Tresper Clarke High School, New York. As a professional, he took to golf in 1995 at the age of 22. Slowly he became an Indian player of top slot.

 

He became one of the leading players on the Asian Tour, topping the order of merit in 2003. Thus he became the first golf player to win a million U.S. dollars on the tour, after winning Hero Honda Masters in India. He is only the second Indian golfer to earn membership of the European Tour after Jeev Milkha Singh and the first to win on a European Tour event. In 2002 Caltex Singapore Masters, he notched up a five stroke victory. Since then he owns many successful tournaments to his credit. In 2010 he faced a shoulder injury soon after 2010 RBC Canadian Open.
