Aribam Syam Sharma Biography 
Aribam Syam Sharma is a film director and music composer belonging to Manipuri cinema. He is an acclaimed artist who is a recipient of numerous honours such as Golden Montgolfiere (1982), Padma Shri (2006), V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award (2008), Kamal Kumari National Award (2009) and Jewel of Manipuri Cinema (2015). Many of his films have been screened at several international film festivals, and have received many awards and nominations. Ishanou, Olangthagee Wangmadasu, Imagi Ningthem etc are some of his highly acclaimed works. He has given some of the blockbuster hits to Manipuri cinema creating records. He was conferred with the Jewel of Manipuri Cinema Award in 2014.
Aribam Syam Sharma hails from Imphal, Manipur. He was born in the year 1936. He started film journey with Manipuri cinema in the early 1970s. He got his first break as a music composer through 1972 film Matamgi Manipur. He also played a cameo role in the film, marking his screen debut. After that he preferred to remain in the rear end of camera, and worked as a director. In 1974 he directed his first movie Lamja Parshuram which became the first Manipuri film to run for 100 days in the box office. After getting a magical start as a film director, he never looked back and he went on to become one of the greatest film directors of Manipuri cinema.
His second film was Saphabee released in 1976. In year 1980 he created yet another history. His third film Olangthagee Wangmadasu had 28 weeks of continuous run at theatre, and it became the first Manipuri movie to complete 25 weeks. For his directorial venture Imagi Ningthem in 1981, he composed music as well. The film received the Montgolfiere d' Or at the Festival of Three Continents, Nantes in 1982. It was the first movie which earned him international acclaim.
