Appan Menon Biography

Appan Menon was a print and television journalist from Kerala, most known for the association with NDTV where he worked as a News editor and anchor. He anchored the international news show The World This Week on Doordarshan in 1980s, before he moved to NDTV in 1988 when it was established the same year. He died at a comparatively younger age of 46 at New Delhi when he was at the peak of his journalist career.  

 

Appan Menon Memorial Trust was set up in 1996 in memory of Menon which announces Appan Menon Award for Journalism on his birthday. The Trust awards 1 lakh rupees every year to professional journalists with minimum three years’ experience, working in the area of World Affairs or Development news with an Indian perspective. Menon is regarded as a senior television journalist all time. He was specialized in Latin American politics and was one of the leading names in this category.

 

He was born on September 17, 1947. He started his journalist journey as an agency reporter and later worked in the print before moving to television in its early years. He worked with Doordarshan at first, anchoring ‘The World This Week’ during 1980’s. He has worked with news agencies - PTI and UNI and has experience with the United Nations Headquarters for Inter Press Service. Then he moved to print media, working for The Hindu newspaper, Frontline magazine, Press Trust of India and United News of India.

 

In the late 1980’s, he moved to Doordarshan and he finally settled with NDTV, one of the leading Indian news channels at present. He was working as news editor when his death happened in his sleep. He died in New Delhi on June 28, 1996.
