Anuradha Ramanan Biography

Anuradha Ramanan was a female author from Tamil literature who lived during 29 June 1947 – 16 May 2010. She was also an artist and social activist. She was well known for her "anti-divorce counselling" work. She has been associated with literal world nearly three decades, authoring 800 novels and 1,230 short stories. Most of them were themes chosen from family dramas and day to day lives. Her visits to the math of Jayendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam have stirred a lot of controversies way back then. Many of her books have been adapted to silver screen, and won many awards and recognitions too.

 

Anuradha Ramanan was born on 29 June 1947 in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. She was the granddaughter of R. Balasubramaniam, noted Tamil actor of early era of Tamil cinema. It was her grandfather who inspired her to write more, and encouraged her in writing. After trying with different kinds of jobs, Anuradha started her career as an artist. The editor of Mangai, a Tamil magazine found her writings interesting and it encouraged her to take writing as her profession. She was associated with the magazine since 1977 and also started her literal journey along with it.

 

One of her early works Sirai, won a gold medal for best short story from Ananda Vikatan magazine. Later it was made to a film with the same title. Not only that, many of her stories have been adapted to silver screen, Kootu Puzhukkal, Oru Malarin Payanam and Oru Veedu Iruvasal to mention a few.  Her works have been adapted in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu language movies, and a few television serials too. She passed away in 2010 following a cardiac arrest.
