Anupama Niranjana Biography

Anupama Niranjana was a prominent female writer of 20th century belonging to Kannada literature. She is the wife of Niranjana (Kulakunda Shiva Rao), the popular Kannada writer, known as a playwright, novelist and a freedom fighter who wrote more than sixty books. Anupama Niranjana was a writer and physician. She was known to be a progressive writer who advocated the woman's point of view and authored many novels. The couple had two children. Anupama died of cancer in 1991, and Niranjana died one year later. An award has been instituted in her name for women writing in Kannada, and is titled Anupama Award, given every year to a Kannada writer.

 

Her real name is Venkata Lakshmi. She was born in 1934 in Tirthahalli, British India of present day Karnataka. She was a doctor by profession who practised in Dharwad and Bangalore regions. Since young, Anupama was drawn towards writing stories, and most of them dealt with women issues. Later too most of her published works were related to women liberation, their freedom and rights. She stood as an advocate for the rights for women, and fought for it. She married famous Kannada writer Niranjana, and the couple had two daughters, who later chose teaching as their profession.

 

She is a recipient of Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award and Soviet Land Nehru Award. Her famous novel, Runamuktalu has been made into a feature film. Other major works include - Mukti Chitra, Madhavi, Ghosha, Nati, Moolamukhi, Cancer Jagattu, Taayi magu, Shwetambari, Aala, Kallol, Sneh Pallavi, Runamuktalu, Odalu, Nenapu: Sihi-Kahi etc. Moolamukhi was her last novel. Dinakkondu Kathe was a collection of kids’ stories.
