Anup Sah Biography

Anup Sah is a professional photographer best known for Capturing Himalayan Life. He is also an accomplished mountaineer, beekeeper, mushroom expert and a naturalist. He currently heads Nainital Mountaineering Club (NTMC) that grooms young mountaineers. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian art and photography, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2019. 69 year old ace photographer was extremely pleased when he was rewarded for this award. In fact he never expected it. Many of his photos have been internationally acclaimed and have been featured in leading journals on nature and wild life.

 

Anup hails from Nainital, Uttarakhand. He received his first camera, Afga as a gift from his father in 1964. Photography remains his personal favourite, through which he captured the life of birds, animals and plants of Himalayas. He is also known for his mountaineering expeditions in Himalayas. A great lover of Himalayan mountain ranges, Sah has scaled some of the toughest Himalayan peaks such as Panchachuli, Mt Nanda Khat, Devisthan Peak, Mt Panwali Dwar etc. He led the Trail Pass expedition in 1992, which was completed by any group after a long gap of 53 years. He also trains students in mountaineering and currently heads Nainital Mountaineering Club.

 

Through his camera he captures Himalayas as a whole. He has captured the pictures of birds, animals – big cats, migratory birds, festivals of the Himalayan people, hill culture etc. Anup's work on photography got gradually noticed over time, and now he received country’s one of the most prestigious award, Padma Shri. He is a member of the Uttarakhand Wildlife Board, which aims at protecting wildlife and jungles.
