Anup Kumar Biography

Anup Kumar was an actor of Bengali cinema. He was born on 17 June 1930 in Kolkata and died on 3 September 1998. His real name was Satyen Das. He was born to singer Dhirendra Nath Das. His wife Aloka Ganguly is a Bengali actress. In 1964, he was awarded the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award for Best Actor in the film Palatak. He was also associated with live theatre, yatras. He has also directed a few movies. In 1954, he appeared in Bengali movie, Agni Pareeksha which happened to be the debut movie of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. He has been awarded with silver medal from the Star Theatre. In 1997, he was recognized by the BFJA Awards for completing 50 years in Indian cinema. He appeared as Jadayu in Satyajit Ray's detective Feluda.

Young Anup Kumar took acting lessons from his father and artist, Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. He debut silver screen as a child artist in the year 1938 with the movie, Haalkatha. Nimontron and Palatak were other early movies. Up to date, Palatak is widely accepted as his best performance. He is also known perfect timing while enacting comic roles. 'Basanto Bilap', 'Mouchak', 'Dadar Kirti' and 'Protisodh' are the memorable movies of Anup as a comic actor.  His place is among great comedians of Bengali cinema - Bhanu Bandopadhyay, Nabawdip Haldar, Jahor Roy and Robi Ghose.

Throughout his life, he has received numerous awards as an actor as well as a director. He received best actor award from BFJA for the movie, Palatak. In 1988, he won the West Bengal Natya Academy Award. One year later, he was awarded Siromoni Prize. In 1991, he received Best Director for his yatras. A few of his movies include -  Bhakta Raghunath, Sagarika, Shyamili, Joy Maa Kali Boarding, Mahakavi Girish Chandra, Baishey Shravana, Benarasi, Barjatri, Rami Chandidas and Annapurnar Mandir.
