Anjan Chattopadhyay Biography

Anjan Chattopadhyay is an accomplished sitar player from Bengal. Performed hundreds of concerts across the world, he is also known for his collaboration with many leading artists to create fusion forms of music. Michael Madhusudan Dutt award in 2007, Ustad Vilayat Khan Music Award in 2006, Swami Haridas Samman award in 2005 and ‘Surmani’ title after performing at Kal-Ke-Kalakar music festival in Mumbai in 1987 are the major honours and awards received by him. The title ‘Sangeet Visharad’ by Pracheen Kalakendra, Chandigarh in 1988 and the Certificate of Achievement by Academy of Indian Music and Fine Arts and University of Maryland, Baltimore are among other honours. Anjan has also released many discs.

 

He was born in a family of culture and aristocracy in Kolkata. He was brought up in an atmosphere of classical music. His elder brother Pandit Gourishankar Chattopadhyay is an eminent Surbahar and sitar player belonging to Senia Gharana. It was his elder brother who initiated him to the world of sitar at a younger age. He also received initial vocal training from his elder sister. More committed to music, he took rigorous and tough learning from his brother. His first performance was done at the age of 9 in 1969, and earned praises since then.

 

He completed graduation in arts from Calcutta University. He later became disciple of the tabla wizard Ustad Shaukat Ali Khan, followed by sitar from world famous Sitarist Surasree Kalyani Roy, a disciple of great Ustad Vilayat Khan. He also learnt vocal music under the tutelage of Shree Muktipada Dutta, belonging to Agra Kharana. Over the decades, he has established as one of the leading sitar plays of Modern Indian music.
