Anita Dongre Biography

Anita Dongre is a successful fashion designer from India. Anita studied fashion design at the S.N.D.T. Fashion Institute in Mumbai and is the co-founder of ‘And Designs India Limited’ (ADIL) along with her sister Meena Sehra and brother Mukesh Sawlani. Anita married Pravin Dongre, an influential businessman and their son Yash is now an integral part of ADIL. Most recently she was awarded by ‘Excellence in Fashion Design’ in 2013 by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Ladies Organization, Bombay Chapter. In 2012, she was featured in Fortune magazine as one of the 50 most powerful women in Indian business.

Anita was born on 3 October 1963 in Mumbai. At the age of 12, she decided that fashion industry and costume designing will be her dreams to pursue. She had passion for creativity and designing clothes right from childhood. At first she designed kid’s wear up to 12 years for almost all the famous boutiques in Mumbai. It was during late 1980’s and 1990’s when Indian fashion industry was in infant form. Anita studied fashion design at the S.N.D.T. Fashion Institute in Mumbai. She found that Indians are fashion conscious now and they used to travel abroad to buy the latest costumes as per the new trends and fashion, though heavily embroidered Indian pieces also sell for high prices. That’s how she decided to start her own brand.

She started ADIL along with her siblings in the year 1998. She started with a 300 square feet shop in Mumbai’s first mall, Crossroads. Today her brands AND (western wear) Global Desi (Indo-western) and Anita Dongre has more than 475 stores across India. She also owns a jewellery line Pinkcity, which is jadau jewellery inspired by Rajasthan.
