Anil Sharma Biography

Anil Sharma is a popular director of Bollywood with ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ fame. This movie released in the year 2001 was declared as ‘all time blockbuster’ and it even earned more than Oscar award nominated movie Lagaan of the year. It was the top grosser of 2001 too and when the movie was released, it was the top grosser movie in the history of Bollywood breaking the records of Sholay, Hum aapke hain kaun and DDLJ, if inflation figures are not counted.  He also holds a unique record of 100% success with his best friend Dharmendra too. Their association started with Hukumat in the year 1987. With Dharmendra, he has delivered success movies like Apne (2007), Elaan-E-Jung (1989), Farishtay (1991) and Tahalka (1992). It was repeated with his son Sunny Deol too. But The Hero: Love Story of a Spy was a flop.  

Anil Sharma arrived in Mumbai during the mid-70s and made his directional debut with Shradhanjali with Raakhee Gulzar in the year 1981. He has also assisted B.R. Chopra in a few movies like 'Pati Patni Aur Woh', 'The Burning Train' and 'Insaf Ka Tarazu'. He has also acted in a few movies in those days. He has delivered many hit movies during 80’s as a director. With the successful movie, Elaan-E-Jung (1989), he entered production field too. He has worked with almost all leading stars of Bollywood during 80’s and 90’s – Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jayaprada, Manisha Koirala, Govinda, Sridevi, Akshay Kumar and Jeetendra. He has delivered many successful films as well. But it took two decades to get public attention. As predicted, Gaddar was a roaring success breaking all box office records. With this movie, Amisha Patel became a top heroine with two all tome blockbusters in a row (Kaho na pyar hai and Gaddar).

Other movies of Anil Sharma (as producer/director/writer) include – Maharaja, Madhoshi, Aashiq, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo, Veer, Policewala Gunda and Bandhan Kuchchey Dhaagon Ka. With new stars, he has worked with Bobby Deol, Karishma Kapoor, Priety Zinta, Katrina Kaif, Shilpa Shetty, Bipasha Basu, John Abraham and Priyanka chopra. In the movie Apna, he repeated the success with Dharmendra. Not only that, it’s for the first time Dharmendra and his two sons worked together in a movie.
