Anil Akkara Biography

Anil Akkara is an Indian politician from Thrissur, Kerala belonging to Indian National Congress. He currently serves as MLA of Wadakkanchery constituency. He was elected for the first time to state assembly in 2016 state assembly elections and this first time legislator got a party ticket due to his impressive work as a panchayat President in Adat Panchayat, Thrissur. Under his tenure he transformed Adat village to best panchayat of Kerala with organic farming and sanitation initiatives which enabled the grama panchayat to win many state and national level awards including Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar of the Central government and Kerala’s Swaraj Award for the ideal panchayat.

In 2016 state assembly elections, in a nail biting finish he defeated CPI (M) candidate Mary Thomas by a narrow margin of 43 votes, marking the lowest margin in the state. Despite contesting for state assembly elections for the first time, he emerged as the only NDA candidate of Thrissur district who managed to win in state assembly elections when Congress faced a severe disaster across Kerala. LDF swept Thrissur conquering 13 out of 14 constituencies, with Anil Akkara being the only NDA candidate who won the elections, though with a very narrow margin below 50 votes. He got 65535 votes while Mary Thomas won 65492 votes.

It was a high period of suspense and drama when a technical glitch occurred in one of the voting machines. In the noon, before the votes in this counting machine were counted, Anil had a majority of only three votes over Mary Thomas. When the technical issue was resolved in the evening, luck stood with Anil Akkara, and he became the only NDA candidate from Thrissur district.

Anil Akkare served as President for Adat grama panchayath for 7 years. He has also served as President of Development standing committee in Thrissur district panchayat and also held an additional responsibility of Thrissur district panchayath for a brief period. Under his tenure, each home of his panchayat became self-reliant in agriculture and sufficient in water facility. The Adat model of development is a much talked-about term among the grama panchayats. The Panchayat also provides free seeds to farmers, apart from bank guarantee. All BPL cardholders among senior citizens get free medical treatment also.

The panchayat earned national fame through its achievements in agriculture, waste management, drinking water and welfare schemes. NDA is in power since year 2000. Anil Akkara was a youth leader when he took the mantle of Panchayat President.
