Anik Dutta Biography

Anik Dutta is a noted film director associated with Bengali cinema and Bollywood. Great filmmaker Bimal Roy is his granduncle. He has directed only three movies till now. Bengali movies - Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012) and Aschorjo Prodip (2013), and the remake of his own hit film on ghosts Bhooter Bhabishyat. The Bollywood film was made with the title, Gang of Ghosts in 2014. Despite getting positive reviews from critics, the film was a box office failure. Anik has been an independent film maker, associated with ad films and documentaries for 20 years before he moved to commercial feature films.  

Anik’s debut film Bhooter Bhobishyot was the only Bengali entry at the River to River 2012: Florence Indian Film Festival and was invited for a screening at Cannes. The movie was a great critic and commercial success. He penned its script and lyrics as well. Bhooter Bhobishyot ran for three weeks in four multiplexes in Mumbai and he later remade it to Hindi. The film was based on Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay's novel Aschorjo Prodip.

Anik is a Bengali. After graduation, Anik completed Post-graduation Diploma in Integrated Marketing Communication at St. Xaviers’s College, Kolkata. He has worked as an independent filmmaker for 20 years before he made his first Bengali film. Though the movie had all elements of a commercial cinema, his debut film placed his name among a new crop of smart young film-makers.

As an independent film maker, he owns his own production companies – Bioscope and Filmshop, which primarily focused in the field of advertising. He has made many corporate films, ad films, documentaries, promos etc. His company produced nearly 400 television commercials of many leading Indian companies like Tata Steel, ITC, SmithKline Beecham, Khaitan, Shalimar, SAIL, Glaxo SmithKline etc. IN 2004, he won an award in the best original commercial category at the Srijon Samman. Anik Dutta is grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, the founder of United Bank of India.
